Why Are There Differences in The Gospels: Mengkaji Perbedaan-Perbedaan dalam Kitab-Kitab Injil dari Sudut Pandang Biografi Kuno

Event Programme

  1. Hari ke-1 / 16 Maret 2018
  2. Hari ke-2 / 17 Maret 2018
Session 1

The Challenge of Gospel Differences

• The Case for the Divine Inspiration of the Bible
• What is Biblical Inerrancy?
• But . . . what about Gospel differences/discrepancies/contradictions?
Session 2

Keeping the Matter in Perspective

• The truth of Christianity is contingent on Jesus’ resurrection and not on the Bible’s being without any errors.
• Since the Bible does not tell us the mechanism(s) God used to inspire the biblical authors, we can posit a few models, some of which allow errors. Thus, it is conceivable for God to inspire Scripture that contains errors. This is not to say the Bible has errors. It is to say some errors in the Bible do not prove that it was not divinely inspired or historically reliable.
Session 3

The Gospels are Ancient Biographies: The Matter of Genre and its implications

• Characteristics of Ancient Biography
• Objective: Create a Literary Portrait of the Main Character
• Examples
Session 4

Compositional Textbooks

• Discuss what these textbooks and why they were used.
• Provide a few examples in the Gospels that show the authors were familiar with the compositional textbooks and how this resulted in differences.
Session 5

Who was Plutarch

• Who was Plutarch and why is he important in this discussion?
• Compositional Devices: compression, conflation, displacement, transferal, spotlighting, simplification, crafting narrative details, law of biographical relevance
Session 8

Artificial Chronology & Concluding Thoughts

• 2 examples
• Concluding Thoughts:
o Different wording on Jesus’ words informs us not dictation but gist.
o We must assess the Gospels by the literary conventions in play when they were written rather than importing our idea of modern precision upon them. o High view of Scripture requires that we accept what God has given us rather than attempting to force it to fit a mold of how we think God should have given it to us.
o Gospel differences do not undermine the historical reliability of the Gospels.
